Our Story

We are the Smith Family (Kevin, Tracey, Lucas & Lana) and we live on a croft outside the village of Kiltarlity in the beautiful Highlands of Scotland. We are now the 5th generation living here.

For many years we have wanted to diversify our croft and help others to enjoy the wonderful area we live in, and in October 2021 we were finally given permission to build a cottage in a small area of our woodland.

Our focus is to help people see why we love living here. With the North Coast 500, the City of Inverness and the fantastic Loch Ness all nearby there is something for everyone. Croftwood Cottage provides a tranquil location for exploring the local area and enjoying the health benefits of being in the country.

Out here it is not difficult to get a glimpse of some of Scotland’s finest wildlife. Highland cows, red squirrels and red kites can all be seen locally so we actively encourage you to take a short stroll or cycle from our cottage to best enjoy the sights.

We also enjoy some of the darkest skies in Europe and hope you get a chance to view the beautiful dark starry sky while you stay with us.

Doing Our Bit

Because we love and respect the countryside we live in, we want to help look after it. Therefore we are doing our best to reduce our carbon footprint. Croftwood Cottage was designed and built in the North of Scotland. It is super insulated and super airtight, helping to reduce any heating requirements. It uses a mix of mechanical ventilation heat recovery and infrared heating to create a healthy indoors. Infrared heating has many health benefits and does not heat the air, which means it does not move dust, pollen and allergens around the indoor environment. We have two solar thermal panel to help heat the water. Our guests can also take advantage of our Go Zero EV Charger and lockable bike storage.

Our cottage is designed to maximise the solar gain by having south and west facing windows which conveniently take in the fantastic views across the rolling countryside.

As crofters, we are certainly used to re-using and recycling wherever we can, so we have continued this theme with the cottage – our coat hooks by the front door used to be our son’s bed frame, and the shoe rack and kitchen shelves are made with off-cuts and leftovers from the kit used to build the house! The bedroom carpets are made from recycled plastic bottles and the planters outside are made from recycled tyres. The picnic bench outside is also made from recycled farm wrap.
